    Outschool Homeschool: A Cheap Way to Hack Your Homeschooling!

    Today I’m going to share our favorite affordable way to hack our homeschooling: Outschool homeschool! We love Outschool as a roadschooling family because it totally broadens the way we can homeschool for such affordable prices.

    So if you’ve never tried Outschool homeschool before, here’s how they describe themselves: “Outschool is an innovative education platform that offers a variety of engaging, small-group classes online. Unlike traditional classes, Outschool classes give kids the unique opportunity to explore their interests in-depth via interactive, live video by experienced, independent educators.”

    They offer over a hundred thousand online classes at this point, so there truly is an option for just about anything.

    If this is your first time on our page, you might appreciate a little context about us before I tell you why we love Outschool. We’re a full time travel family of five with elementary school aged kids. I grew up homeschooled myself, although I wasn’t planning to homeschool my kids until the pandemic changed everything for us. We definitely lean towards unschoolers, but we do use some curriculum! If you’re interested, we’ve gathered our must-have gear for roadschooling.

    Now on to the Outschool homeschool review good stuff!

    Outschool Homeschool: What We Love

    There’s a lot to love about Outschool, in my opinion. Here’s why we think it’s especially amazing for our lifestyle:

    It allows for kids to learn about truly niche topics

    Because Outschool offers 140,000 different online classes, there truly is a class for just about everyone. We love to follow our kids’ interests as we homeschool, and our kids have come up with some fun ones like world mythology. When we went to find elementary school appropriate mythology classes, there were multiple to choose from. How awesome is that? Niche interests like comic book creation and veterinary science have also been met by Outschool classes.

    It gives kids expert instructors for areas where I’m not as confident

    I’m a pretty well-rounded homeschool teacher (I think!), but I will happily admit that I’m not an expert in everything. Who is? Outschool offers the chance to find subject matter experts to teach things like Spanish and advanced science that I’m not as confident in teaching myself. It’s so nice to have that option as a backup in our homeschool, especially as our kids age into more difficult material in middle grades!

    It offers socializing opportunities

    There are some Outschool classes that are specifically for socializing! If you’re traveling around a lot as a roadschooling family or live in an area where it’s hard to find like-minded homeschool families, this could be a great option.

    It’s incredibly flexible

    Some classes have longer commitments, but many are pay-as-you-go! We like that we can cancel at any time for those weekly classes if our kiddos interests have changed or for any other reason!

    It’s affordable

    Outschool classes start at just $5, although most of the classes we’ve taken are in the $10-15 per session range. This is a really affordable option for our family, especially considering how much value we feel the specialty classes offer.

    Outschool Homeschool: The Downsides

    Outschool is amazing, but nothing is perfect, right? Here are the only things I don’t love about it:

    It costs money

    Okay yeah, it’s inexpensive, but it’s not free. Always a bummer for budget homeschool families. But if you’re in a state that has charter funds available, you probably can use those to get reimbursed.

    Sometimes making a frequent schedule commitment is challenging for us

    I have been known to miss a class or two because weekly commitments can be hard for us. Our travel schedule changes a lot, and we have a lot going on. The nice thing is that it’s affordable enough that I’m not devastated when this happens.

    Instructor quality varies a bit

    We have yet to have a *bad* Outschool instructor, but we did end up with one that I thought was only okay. Definitely read class reviews before committing!

    Best Boondocking Apps for Sensational RV Locations

    Like all millennials, I rely on apps to organize my life, and boondocking is no exception! I’ve talked a lot about how we added solar panels to our RV’s roof last year so that we can spend more time off-grid. In 2023, we spent over 100 nights boondocking with our toy hauler, and I anticipate that number will be even higher in 2024. So obviously we now have strong feelings about the best boondocking apps.

    My favorite reasons for boondocking are:

    • Absolutely unbelievable views right from my couch
    • Tons of room for our three kids to roam and act like kids without RV park rules limiting their play
    • Saving tons of money by paying $0 in rent

    Okay, so maybe I’ve convinced you that you should try boondocking. But you may be wondering how we find places to park our RV? Well, there’s an app for that! A few, actually. Here are our picks for the best boondocking apps.

    Best Boondocking Apps

    iOverlander

    iOverlander, best boondocking apps, best boondocking app | O'Phalen Adventures

    iOverlander is the absolute best boondocking app in my opinion. It’s definitely the one we use the most. iOverlander wins for me because of the sheer number of boondocking locations that the app lists. It’s definitely the most comprehensive database of free parking spots that I’ve found. It also tops my list of best boondocking apps because it lists other crucial services that boondockers need. We use iOverlander to find hot showers, laundromats, propane refills, dump stations, potable water fills, and more.

    The only thing to note is that a lot of the spots are catered towards van life dwellers or stealth campers. We are not fitting in tiny spots or flying under the rader with our 37′ fifth wheel. The app does have a checkbox to note if a spot is viable for big rig RVs like ours, but there isn’t a way to filter by that feature. It’s worth it, but that’s my only complaint.

    Campendium

    {Update May 2024: Campendium is being rolled into the paid Roadtrippers app, which I haven’t tested yet. I’ll keep you updated on whether it’s worth trying, but this is disappointing regardless}

    Campendium is another one of the best boondocking apps that we use frequently. I like it because it’s RV-centric, so I feel confident that we’ll fit in most of the spots I find there. I also use it to cross-reference spots I find on iOverlander for that reason. It also shines because it names each spot with a unique name, making it easy for RV folks to share locations like “Lone Mesa Dispersed,” unlike iOverlander, which allows users to set the location name (sometimes randomly). Finally, I really appreciate that Campendium prompts users to review the cell service at each location by carrier. That information is really useful for those of us who are full time RVers working remotely. This is a free app, although it has a paid version we’ve yet to use.

    Harvest Hosts

    Harvest Hosts is the best boondocking app for stays that are also an experience. I’ve written a whole Harvest Hosts review, but the short version is that this is a subscription service that offers one night stays at gorgeous locations like farms, vineyards, and breweries. Harvest Hosts shines as an overnight stay as you’re traveling somewhere else (not sitting down in one location for an extended time period). It also allows us to experience fun excursions like farm or vineyard tours right where we’re camped.

    Boondockers Welcome

    Boondockers Welcome is another paid subscription that rounds out this list of the best boondocking apps. Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome are partner programs, but they differ slightly in what they offer. Boondockers Welcome hosts are regular folks who offer up places to park in places like driveways and big parking lots. Unlike Harvest Hosts, there’s no “experience” offered and many hosts offer stays of one to five nights. And 75% of hosts offer some form of hookups, unlike Harvest Hosts where hookups are rare.

    We’ve been to 49 states and love a good museum. We’ve been to dozens of museums as a family! Some of those are museums that are geared towards adults and some that are specifially targeted towards kids and families. Today I’m sharing what I think are the best museums for kids in the United States (plus a few bonus museums abroad!). If you’re planning a family NYC trip, check out my post with the best NYC museums for kids.

    What makes the best museums for kids?

    Okay, so first off — what do I think makes a museum qualify as “the best”? We’ve taken our kids to so many different types of museums: some have been extremely high brow, while some are kitschy or silly. Some are so big you could never finish them in one day, while some you can read every display and only take two hours. Some are very well-known, while some are tiny holes in the wall.

    Here’s what I think all of the best have in common:

    1. If not targeted towards kids and families, at the very least accepting of our presence
    2. Interactive and engaging, not just signs to read
    3. Interesting for the adults as well
    4. Affordable for a family to visit (or a bucket list experience)
    5. Extra points given for experiences that are totally unique and can’t be found anywhere else

    Tips for enjoying museums for kids

    I truly believe that a museum experience can be fun for the whole family at most museums. That said, we’ve got a few tips for making the most of a museum experience with kids:

    1. Choose museums that have something that will appeal to your particular kids
    2. Pre-game any museum subjects that will get your kids more excited by watching documentaries, reading books, listening to podcasts, etc. (check our our kid podcasts post!)
    3. Go at whatever time of day your kids are at their best selves
    4. Bring snacks, water, and appropriate clothing so everyone is set up for success
    5. Hit the highlights first so you’re not disappointed if your visit is cut short by cranky kids
    6. Be prepared to bail if the kids aren’t up for a long day, and consider any time spent at the museum a great success
    7. Check the museum schedule when you arrive for special events
    8. Look for homeschool or reciprocal discounts on museum admission
    9. Avoid visiting during school holidays if your time is flexible
    10. Chat with your kids before entering about museum behavior expectations, especially for adult-centric museums

    I’m of the mind that kids and families deserve to be in public spaces, and that includes museums. It’s okay if your kids aren’t “perfectly” quiet, and it’s okay if it takes practice for everyone to enjoy a museum day together. I think it’s worth it for all of the things you’ll learn and experience together!

    Today I’m really excited to share the printable travel journal for kids I designed! I’ve looked before for a state worksheet for kids that I felt captured the information I wanted my kids to journal about and remember. Since I never found one I loved, I designed my own!

    This travel journal for kids / state worksheet is perfect for full time travel families who are roadschooling OR any family taking a family vacation! It gives kids the opportunity to document what they learned and reflect on the experience with questions like:

    • What foods are special in this state?
    • Who are the Indigenous people of this area?
    • Did you see any new plants or animals?
    • What was different about how kids live here?
    • Share a random fact about this state?
    • Share some topics you’d like to learn more about after visiting this state?

    This travel journal has two different leveled options: one for young elementary kids who need more room to draw and less room to write, plus one for older kids with the ability to journal more in-depth.     It’s no secret that one of the best resources in the world is a free library card. Especially if you’re homeschooling! Our public library branch in Brooklyn was one of the hardest things for me to leave behind when we became a full time travel family. BUT that doesn’t mean we’ve given up on libraries!

    And as I’ve spoken to a lot of traveling families, I’ve discovered that not everyone knows how easy and accessible it can be to get a non resident library card! So I’ve decided to put together a resource to help traveling families with information about where to get a free library card (or cheap library card!) as a non resident.

    Why Get a Free Library Card as You Travel?

    Libraries are an amazing resource just to visit, even without a library card. But when we’re in one place for a bit, being able to check out books for all of us is a gift. Libraries also offer some extra perks, depending on the library. California libraries, for example, offer a California State Park Pass to save you some money. Many libraries have discounted or cheap museum passes for their city, as well. And some libraries we’ve been to even loan household items like a leaf blower or Instapot!

    Is Every Library on This List Offering a Free Library Card?

    I included libraries that charge a small fee for non-residents. It’s often worth it to me to pay when we’re staying somewhere for a few weeks or longer!

    Why Would I Bother With an E-Card?

    Libby, Kanopy, and Hoopla offer electronic resources that are an invaluable resource. We check out hundreds of ebooks a year through the Libby app. I read the books on my phone and Kindle, and our oldest has her own Kindle that she can read library books on, too. Kanopy and Hoopla offer movies, music, and more! We love using them to check out a musical album to listen to for awhile or to watch an interesting documentary.

    A few of these libraries even offer electronic cards that you can apply for online, meaning you don’t even have to drop by the branch to receive one.

    Am I a Resident If I’m Staying Somewhere For a Month or Longer?

    Keep in mind that libraries have varying responses to whether a campground address or bill is proof of residency. Libraries not included on this list may give out free library cards to “residents” of RV parks, but I haven’t included them unless someone has personally verified that or it is clearly defined on their website. Some libraries also give full borrowing privileges to people who work in the area, which doesn’t apply to us, but may apply to some traveling families.

    I’m really excited to share this RV Checklist for Travel I designed with you today!

    I chuckle when I think back to how it took us two hours to hitch up the first time we moved the RV. Thankfully, it’s been two years of owning this baby and almost as long living in it, and we’ve towed it to Alaska and back safely! You could say we’ve got travel days down to a science. We break up our move day prep into categories: the day before, the morning of, ready to go, and setup. I’m not about last-minute travel preparation!

    Even still, it’s so easy to forget something essential in the chaos of packing up your RV to travel. Whether it’s because we’re on a time crunch or the kids keep interrupting us or we’re simply under the weather, I always feel like there’s one (different!) thing that slips our mind as we pack up. That’s why I absolutely never skip using our RV checklist for travel. Never.

    So I thought I’d use my RV packing expertise and combine it with my love of designing printables to create an RV checklist for travel that’s really adorable. Voila!

    I designed this with the idea that you can download it, print it double-sided, and laminate it. Then it’s reusable with a dry erase marker for as many years as you need it! Bonus points for attaching some velcro to secure it to the inside of an RV cabinet. Then it’s easily within reach for you (and a partner!) to make sure you’re not forgetting any safety or sanity items as you get ready for a travel day.
